What Does it take to strike out on your own?
They called it corporate downsizing.
He was the fresh, energetic and eager therapist who was supposed to grow the program, laid off when COVID hit and demolished the census. She was promoted to clinical director, charged with getting through a state audit, yet she was unceremoniously cut as soon as the business passed with flying colors. “It’s just the reality of the business,” both of us were told, in different rooms at different times. “You’ve been great, but we have to let you go.”
A sudden loss of work when you’ve been doing well can be a hard thing to handle, and in our case it left both of us disillusioned with the corporate world of therapy. We had worked incredibly hard, believed that we were a fundamental part of something, and each of us were coldly cut in turn due to simple corporate mismanagement.
What do you do when hard work doesn’t pay off?
Each of us, in turn, made a decision. We wouldn’t go back to the corporate world of therapy. It was hard to turn away from the certainty of a consistent paycheck, to walk into the unknown. To trust that we had real value that people would recognize. To trust that we could handle the complexity of running our own businesses for the first time.
Each of us, in turn, supported the other. It was not easy for either of us to have the confidence to push forward, and both of us relied on the other. It was hard, and still often lonely, but with support and courage we each managed to navigate and build our own practices.
Each of us, in turn, became a success.
At first, our practices felt like fragile things that could disappear at any moment. Over time, we gained confidence and expertise, and realized how consistent and fulfilling private practice can actually be. Now, it feels almost simple.
Starting a private practice was one of the scariest things either of us has ever done. It’s also the best thing we’ve ever done.
We have full freedom to work with the clients we want. We control our schedules, which means more and better time with both our kids and each other. We make much more money than we ever would have working for someone else. Most importantly, we have full control over our work and our destiny.
You can do it too.
After finding success, we started to help others.
Maybe it’s the natural human instinct to share what we’ve learned. Maybe we just delighted in seeing people find success. Maybe it’s just part of being the helping kind of person who would become a therapist in the first place. Whatever it was, we started to help other therapists start their own private practices, using the wisdom we had gained to help them along.
Now, we’ve realized that helping people start private practice is more than a hobby, it’s a passion. We want to help people find their own success, and live the dream job they first envisioned when they started on their journey to become a therapist.
Let us help you become the next success story.
Whether you are a fresh graduate or have decades in the field, we can help you start your own private practice and find success. This doesn’t mean you work for us- we will provide you support, knowledge, guidance, referrals, and administrative help, but YOU will fully own your business. We do not prescribe exactly how, where, and when you do therapy. We want you to have the true freedom to build the private practice you want.
Hi, we are Maxx and Kellee Myers!
We have helped many people make their private practice successful, and now we want to help YOU take your next step!
Both of us have worked in this field for over a decade, and have done everything from inpatient psychiatric hospitals, to rehab centers, to finally owning our own successful private practices. Along the way, we have learned a ton of valuable lessons about what works, what doesn’t, and the importance of building confidence and skills- both in therapy, and in running a business.
